Who pays the extra three rupees?

A bill of Rs 1,003 does not split four ways. Somebody has to take what is left over. Here is who, and why it is never a fight.

By Rizwan

Four flatmates. One bill of Rs 1,003. Divide it by four and it does not come out even. Three rupees are left over, and three rupees cannot be shared by four people.

So every flat invents a rule. The three rupees are forgotten. Or someone rounds up and remembers it for a year. Or the person with the calculator reads out a number with paisa in it, and everyone agrees to stop being friends for the evening.

The rule in a Room

A Room in HisaabFlow has one rule, and it is the same every time.

  • A bill is split equally between the people you tag.
  • Every share is in whole rupees. There are no paisa anywhere.
  • Whoever paid the bill takes the odd rupees.

So Rs 1,003 four ways is 253, 250, 250 and 250. The person who paid is the 253. The other three owe 250 each, and the four shares add back to exactly what the bill was.

Why the one who paid

Because it is the only choice nobody argues with. The one who paid already has the receipt in their hand and the money out of their account. A few rupees more on their own share costs them a few rupees. A few rupees on anyone else's share costs a conversation.

It also means nobody is chased for an amount that looks petty. Asking for 250 is asking for a share of the bill. Asking for 250 and some paisa is a personality.

Why not keep the paisa

Because they come back. Round each share on its own and you get four numbers that do not add up to the bill, and the difference has to live somewhere. Over a year of rent, internet and the mess bill, a flat collects rupees that belong to no one, and a ledger that is off by an amount nobody can explain.

In a Room the shares always add up to the rupee, so the ledger does not drift. It is done by ordinary code, the same way each time. No AI is asked what a quarter of a bill is.

What it looks like

You type the bill and tag the people. "Rent 4000 @ali @ahmad @arslan" is Rs 4,000 four ways, Rs 1,000 each: you, and the three you tagged. A bill with nobody tagged is yours alone.

Splits are equal for now. You choose who is in each bill, so three people can share a dinner in a Room of five. See how Rooms work.
